The Guide to SumuMUD
======================

I.    Introduction 

      SumuMUD is a multiuser online game based on a fantasy medieval genre.
      The game introduces a world filled with places to adventure and explore.
      As you are born into the world of Sumu, you meet different kind of
      adventurers and confront many creatures on your journey.

      The world of Sumu has many races to choose to born into and paths
      to choose from. Examples of the paths that an adventurer can take
      are that find the secret organization of thieves and learning their
      secrets while also training the mystical arts of magic.

      The path you decide is all up to you where you lead your own way.

      You might take some lessons with the fighter trainers to learn
      how to swing that big old rusty sword you inherited from your
      father just a day before he got eatern by orcs or head down to
      small study rooms to unlock the secrets that old scroll you found
      from somewhere.

      Magicians and sorcerers - the robed guys with pointy hats that
      wave their hands and shout strange words and conjure fireballs
      to fry the deadly orc next to them. The mysterious warlocks who are
      specialized summoning demons and use of destructive force or the
      strange grave yard shifts of the necromancers who control the forces
      of the undeads. You might have an eye for a gold and shiny items, the
      guild of thieves would cladly take you in and train you in the arts
      of nimble fingers and sneaking in the shadows or perhaps you enjoy
      a good music and are a natural born tale teller - then you can find
      your kind at the guild hall of the merry bards to sit down around
      the campfire to sing and dance. These are just examples, there are
      many more guilds to choose from and join to.

      As you travel and explore the world of Sumu, it is wise to equip
      yourself with armors and weapons and pack your backpack with, food,
      torches to see in that dark cave of the nasty goblins and other
      general items needed in adventures.

      You can buy some general armors and weapons from the shops and
      sometimes might get lucky and get a magic armor or a weapon from
      the shopkeeper for a cheap price! As you grow in your adventures
      you confront creatures and monster which are holding magical items,
      weapons or armors. As you have gathered your hard earned armors and
      weapons you can store them in a locker room rental place found in
      many cities or another adventurer can rent or sell you a room from
      their huge castles. You can also buy a castle of your very own, but
      as everyone knows, the castles are pricy and takes a lot of money
      to hire your own personal guards to keep the intruders away and
      set traps to protect your treasure chests.

      The adventures will take you places where you encounter very tough
      monsters and if you are lucky you might just be able to get around
      them unnoticed or escape just before they are about to slay you.
      As you meet up with other adventurers you might ask them to share
      your adventure with you and come to help you to slay the horrifying
      monster you had an encounter with.

      The violence towards fellow adventures is allowed in certain limits,
      however, a cold blooded murder is not a thing that is taken lightly
      unless the killer had a valid and good reason for his act of violence. 

      Otherwise the world of Sumu is is a complex place where you act as
      you would act in real life in similar environment.

II.   Start

      You enter the world as a shapeless spirit, looking its new form
      to born in the world. You are floting in a place next to a portal
      which leads to the mortal realm. From there you must first choose
      the race and a gender which you will appear as you enter to the
      mortal world. You have also an option to choose your personal
      alignment either you want to born as a servant of evil or a follower
      of good or just take a neutral point of view to the events happening
      around you. As you have chosen your mortal form you are ready to
      step through the portal and enter the world where you appear in
      the temple of all gods. The temple will serve as your starting place
      when you enter the world of Sumu. You may change your default
      starting place with a command 'start' (help start).

      As now that you stand in the halls of the church of the all gods
      there is a guide to give you a small tour around the place and
      some basic information.

      After the tour you have some information about the city of Aquilonia
      and it is time to advance a few levels for you in the Adventurers' guild.

      As you have advanced a couple levels it is time for you to get some
      basic training; head east from the advancement room and look at note
      which would explain the physical and mental training after you choose
      how to build up your physical and mental abilities you can find a few
      basic trainers from the adventurers' guild who will teach you a few
      tricks from their sleeves.

      The file 'help newbie' lists some suitable areas for newbies.


III.  Commands

      'help' shows the verbose list of available commands and is a good way
      to try out and see what you can do.

      NOTE: 'help builtin' shows so called builtin command-aliases, for
      example you don't have to type 'look at sword', but instead can type
      the short-hand version: 'la sword'.  You can also use the command
      'command' to specify your custom command-aliases, and the command
      'alias' for specifying nicknames.


IV.   Channels

      Type 'channels' for a list of the global chatting channels.  'mud' is
      the general channel for mud related gossip, where you can politely ask
      help from other players.  There are also other channels for other
      topics, also including non-game related topics, such as 'chat' for
      common small talk and 'tv' that lists the currently running programmes
      on Finnish nation-wide television.


V.    Races

      SumuMUD offers many different races, and each race has it's own
      charasteristics.  See 'help races' for the list, and 'help race
      <name>' for detailed information about the desired race.


VI.   Experience

      As you explore and kill monsters in your adventures in the world you
      gain experience, which you use to advance levels, train skills and
      study spells. There are rumours about some mystical places where you
      can use your experience also for gaining physical and mental
      enchantments for your character.


VII.  Guild system

      There are many trainers which are either independed or belong under
      some guild organization. The ones in with organization might ask
      you to donate some money to their organization first before they
      will teach you. Also the independed trainers might ask high prices
      to teach their strange ways to you.

      You can advance levels in Adventurers' guild, found e,n,e,s of the
      temple, that serves as the generic starting location for new heroes.

      A word of advice: you may save experience by completing quests that
      are set for some levels, for more information on the quests, see the
      'quest room' which is upstairs of the Adventurers' guild.

      Some of the guild connected trainers can be found inside the
      city, and you may find command 'map' useful.


VIII. Skill & Spell system

      We have Universal Skill and Spell system here.  Depending in the
      trainers and their organization you might have found, you may *train*
      skills or *study* spells in the presence of the trainer.

      Universal skill & spell system means, that different trainers can
      share same spells and skills.
      
      If you have followed the helpfile from the beginning, you
      probably already know that you use the experience points gained from
      killing monsters for 'buying' skills and spells at your selecte
      trainer who offer skills and spells to you.

      You can list all available skills by typing 'all skills' and all
      spells by typing 'all spells'.  For information of a certain skill
      type for example 'help skill strike' or in a case of a spell, 'help
      spell doom bolt'.


IX.   Player killing

      Player killing is allowed within certain limits.  See 'help player
      killing' for more information.


X.    Items & Equipment

      You can gain magical equipment and weapons and other items from the
      big monsters. Adventurers usually band up in a party together to kill
      these tough monsters.
      The equipment can be stored away between sessions in a rented locker
      room, or in a custom-built castle.  Basically this means that you
      won't lose any equipment if you don't want to.


XI.   News system

      This mud has a few bulletin boards, but the main information base is
      the news system.  See 'help news' for more information, or go ahead
      and type 'news read' to launch the news reader.
