| 29th May 1996 | SumuMUD was first opened under the name 'Norssi' which stood for the name of the server, norssi.helsinki.fi. norssi.helsinki.fi was a Pentium120 based PC with 16 megs of memory running Linux. The mud was founded by Oskari Saarenmaa (Pickett) and Heikki Nousiainen (Supa). The gamedriver was MudOS v21.7b22 at that point. |
| 14th July 1996 | The name was changed from Norssi to the current name, Sumu. |
| 1st October 1996 | Yaga, now an archwizard of high rank, entered the mud the first time. He soon became responsible of the general theme of the mud. |
| 10th December 1996 | The castle system was introduced. The first version of them was coded by Supa. |
| 8th September 1997 | A new battle system was installed among with other major changes to the lib code. |
| 9th September 1997 | SumuMUD started accepting donations purely for the benefit of the mud. A computer of our own was #1 on the shopping list. |
| 11th October 1997 | A mudlink system was installed allowing the players of SumuMUD to converse and get user listings from other muds. The muds participated in the system were Sumu, Delphine, MMMM, Icesus and CrimsonSun. |
| 18th October 1997 | A new version of the gamedriver was installed. The current version is MudOS v22pre8. |
| 24th November 1997 | A new version of the gamedriver was installed. The current version is MudOS v22pre11. |
| 19th December 1997 | Sumu bought a AMD K6/200 based computer with 64 megs of memory and a 2 gig harddisk. FreeBSD 2.2.5 was installed on it. The computer was bought with the money donated by the players. |
| 8th January 1998 | Sumu started to run on our own computer which was located at the Data Link Communications OY. |
| 14th March 1998 | The first official Sumu mudcon was held in the bar Chaplin, in Helsinki. |
| 17th March 1998 | Sumu was moved away from DLC into a new location. |
| 19th March 1998 | This document is created. |
| 31th March 1998 | Sumu was moved again, this time to MBNet. |
| 2nd May 1998 | Sumu's harddisk crashed, but all data was recovered on a new 6gig disk. |
| 17th June 1998 | A new battlesystem and spellsystem was introduced. They were created by Gargamel and Morpher. |
| 22th June 1998 | A new SumuWorld is installed. The new realm is many times larger than the old one and offers many new interesting features. |
| 20th July 1998 | Talks of merging SumuMUD with DelphineMUD started. |
| 13th August 1998 | The idea of merging Sumu and Delphine was abandoned due to too many different views of the matter and lack of interest. |
| 10th October 1998 | SumuMUD was featured in the finnish computer game tv program, Tilt!, a rush of new players entered the game and the www pages were accessed over 20 times the normal amount. |
| 10th August 1999 | Quiet times, the mud is being guided and ran mostly by Morpher as the other archwizards are extremely busy. Some new players from outside Finland start to play Sumu. The mudlib is being recoded by Morpher and Pickett while Supa is tweaking the game driver. |
| 10th January 2000 | Sumu is unaffected by the notorious 'Y2K-bug'. |
| 29th February 2000 | Sumu's ip address changes. |
| 15th August 2000 | The mudlib is under heavy reconstruction as Pickett found enough free time to start developing it again. The MudOS project has started again, and Sumu might get an even more stable driver in near future. |
| 1st March 2001 | Unfortunately the efforts in rewriting the Sumu mudlib have not produced enough results that could be put into actual use, and the project, SumuII is abandoned. Some of the features make it into the game, but otherwise it is again rather quiet. |
| 31th July 2001 | Our long co-operation with MBNet ends, and Sumu moves to a temporary asylum in Pickett's apartment's closet. |
| 23th September 2001 | The money system has been rewritten. Previously we only had gold coins but the new system introduces a lot of different coins that have different properties. |
| 4th February 2002 | Morpher creates a new castle system that allows players to build their own homes where they can store their equipment and spend quality time with their friends in environments of their own creation. |
| 28 June 2002 | Sumu moves to a new computer bought with the players' donations. An AMD Athlon XP 1800+ with two 60GB RAID-1 mirrored harddrives and 512MB of memory. The new computer is located at SWelcom's server room and Sumu moves again, after 11 months in Pickett's closet. |
| 01 July 2002 | Sumu joins the Finnish Intermud, allowing players to converse with people from BatMUD, BatMUD HC and Icesus. |
| 23 November 2003 | Sumu's reliable server (shadow.sumu.org) gets a hardware and software upgrade. The server now sports 180 gigabytes of fully raid-1 redundant diskspace, and one gigabyte of RAM. The operating system was upgraded from RedHat Linux 7.3 to Fedora Core 1. |
| 16 March 2004 | Sumu's game driver is updated to a new version, still based on MudOS but including numerous fixes and enhancements created by Pickett. The goal is to keep the driver light and let the MUD LPC code handle all game-related features, while providing useful resources that let the wizards create cool stuff in game. |
| 28 June 2004 | Sumu's website is redesigned to not look as nasty as it used to. |
